Nature's Kansas City Shuffle. The team and I were on a location scouting expedition at the end of the Earth, or at least what felt like it, the most eastern part of Long Island, Montauk. Having driven three hours through the entirety of Long Island and the Hamptons, we parked near the famed light house out there and stretched our legs. I had barely gotten out of the car, not really in a photographic frame of mind yet, fumbled for my Leica.

The door closed and everyone was looking to the right, right at the Light House in full glorious radiance of the bright Fall sun. Me, I was looking left and questioning everything. I looked up at this image in the sky and laughed. If I'm being honest, I didn't want to take this photo. I wasn't ready for it. Nature's little gambit with Aleks as if it say... "Here's your shot. Take it or leave it." So I took it. No one else saw it. It was a tiny moment in time, they looked right, I looked left and the moment captured. Could it be that easy?

Photographers romanticize themselves to be the next Ansel Adams. To take time, and make that picture in patient and painstakingly laborious conditions. I am no different, but this was not the case of patience, just a slap in the face no different than that brisk North Atlantic Ocean air howling... take the damn photo. A one in a million shot.
